Preserving and Promoting Vietnam’s Cultural Heritage through the Vision of President Ho Chi Minh

In the journey toward sustainable national development, cultural heritage serves not only as the spiritual foundation of society but also as an essential internal driving force. President Ho Chi Minh – the revered leader of the Vietnamese people – profoundly emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the nation’s cultural heritage throughout all revolutionary periods.

Culture as the Foundation and Driving Force of Development

According to President Ho Chi Minh, culture is not only a reflection of material and spiritual values but also the origin of national identity, dignity, and the collective aspiration for independence. In his Decree dated December 31, 1945, he directed the National Construction Planning Committee to design comprehensive development strategies across various fields, including culture.

His consistent viewpoint was that no nation can advance without preserving and inheriting its traditional cultural values. Heritage is the adhesive that unites communities and forms the pillars of a progressive culture deeply imbued with national identity.

Achievements in Cultural Heritage Preservation in Vietnam

Inspired by President Ho Chi Minh’s philosophy, Vietnam has achieved significant progress in cultural heritage preservation:

  • A more complete legal framework: The Cultural Heritage Law of 2001 and subsequent amendments have provided a clear legal foundation for preservation efforts.
  • Improved public awareness: Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day (November 23) helps disseminate the importance of cultural values nationwide.
  • Revival of traditional festivals: Over 8,800 festivals are held across the country, with a strong emphasis on traditional cultural celebrations.
  • Technology integration in preservation: Digitization, virtual/augmented reality (AR/VR), and geographic information systems (GIS) are actively used to preserve and present cultural relics more effectively.

Strategic Directions for the Future

To further enhance cultural heritage efforts in an era of global integration, Vietnam must focus on the following strategic solutions:

  • Enhance public education and community engagement to raise awareness and foster a sense of responsibility in heritage preservation.
  • Promote creativity and technological innovation in restoration, storytelling, and cultural communication.
  • Protect the diversity of local cultural expressions and support regional communities in preserving their unique identities.
  • Reinforce pre- and post-restoration control measures to maintain historical authenticity in renovation projects.
  • Encourage participation from younger generations through interactive activities such as festivals, exhibitions, and culturally themed running events.

Connecting Cultural Heritage with Community Sports

In recent years, public sports initiatives such as running events, heritage-themed races, and marathons in Vietnamhave emerged as powerful tools to promote cultural values. Whether through daily running routines, road races in Hanoi, or heritage runs, participants not only enhance their physical health but also form a deeper connection to national traditions.

This synergy between recreational sports and cultural education reflects the very essence of President Ho Chi Minh’s thought: “Culture is the spiritual foundation of society; it is both the goal and the driving force of sustainable development.”
