The Growth of Marathon Running in Vietnam
Compared to countries with long-established running traditions such as the United States, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom—nations renowned for hosting World Marathon Majors—Vietnam is experiencing significant growth, both in participation numbers and overall quality.
Currently, reaching approximately 5,000 runners registered for the 42.195 km marathon distance is a key milestone that marathon event organizers in Vietnam aim for. So, what makes the marathon so appealing despite its high level of difficulty?
The Origin of the Name “Marathon”
The term “marathon” originated in 490 B.C., rooted in ancient Greek legend. According to the story, after the Greek victory over Persian forces on the plains of Marathon, a messenger named Pheidippides ran approximately 40 km from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of victory, collapsing from exhaustion immediately upon completing his mission. This tale inspired the naming of long-distance races as “marathons.”
Why is the Marathon Exactly 42.195 Kilometers?
During the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896, the marathon distance was originally set around 40 km, matching the legendary run by Pheidippides. However, at the 1908 London Olympics, the route was adjusted to exactly 42.195 kilometers, stretching from Windsor Castle to the White City Stadium. Since 1921, this precise distance has been standardized by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), now known as World Athletics, and remains official today.
The Unique Appeal of the Marathon Distance
Statistics indicate that only about 1% of the world’s population can complete a marathon. Finishing a 42.195 km race demands not only physical endurance but also significant mental resilience.
As such, marathon running symbolizes perseverance, determination, and the spirit of overcoming adversity. This explains why it remains the most prestigious event in road racing competitions worldwide.
Marathons at Prestigious International Events
The world’s premier marathons under the World Marathon Majors system—including Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, and the latest addition, Sydney—impose strict qualifying standards. Notably, the Boston Marathon is renowned for having the most stringent entry criteria.
