Given a large number of runners have registered for the 2021race, while the bridge bed is narrow, its rough, uneven surface due to the erosions over time will certainly not meet the professional requirements, affecting marathoners' performance. The Race Organizing Committee (ROC) has decided to adjust the running course and skip the Long Bien bridge to help runners reach their highest performance in the race this year, the year accompanying the 31st SEA Games.

In previous races, the course of the 42-km and the 21-km distances ran through the Long Bien bridge across the Red River. Construction of the bridge began in 1899, lasted until 1902 and it was open to traffic the following year.

The VPBank Hanoi Marathon, organized for the first time in October 2018 and which has since been held annually, is highly appreciated by the runner community as its exclusively non-looping track goes through Hanoi's six inner districts, running past many landmarks and heritage sites, including the historic Long Bien bridge.

Running on the bridge has always been a special experience for marathoners because they would feel connected to part of the capital's history, and also thanks to emotional photos taken by professional photographers in the ROC arrangement.

Details on the running track for the 2021 race will soon be announced by the ROC.

Held annually since 2018, the VPBank Hanoi Marathon has become Hanoi’s official race and won recognition to be a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) since 2019, with a running track standardized by AIMS experts and the Vietnam Athletics Federation. Runners’ results, in addition to be qualified for competing in the 31st SEA Games, are still recognized to qualify for the prestigious Boston Marathon. The VPBank Hanoi Marathon has joined the Age Group Ranking System of Abbott World Marathon Majors, counting from 2022.
