Vietnam's Leading Marathon to Launch National Record Breaking Prize
23/06/2021 - 09:41

The prize launch marks the first time in Vietnam's history of running when a marathon includes such an important prize aimed at creating motivation to raise Vietnam's athletics achievements towards regional and world levels.

In order to fuel runners' competition, the Race Organizing Committee (ROCC) of the VPBank Hanoi Marathon, including the Vietnam Athletics Federation and DHA Vietnam Company, the organizer of the country's Heritage Race series, has just announced the prize with expectations that a new national record will be established.

Apart from the VPBank Hanoi Marathon scheduled to be held in October 2021, the Heritage Race also includes the Halong Bay Heritage Marathon slated for November 7 and the Can Tho Marathon - A Heritage Race in December. Both the races are non-professional marathons, part of the competition system of the Vietnam Athletics Federation and the Vietnam's Sports Administration.

The national marathon record is one of the longest standing among Vietnamese athletics' records. For men, the national record was set at 2:21:51 by runner Nguyen Chi Dong when the 22nd SEA Games was held in Vietnam in 2003.
Previously, the national record of 2:32:00 belonged to runner veteran Bui Luong, Nguyen Chi Dong's coach, had existed for 35 years (from 1968 to 2003). The special thing is that the two share a modest stature (their height is below 1.60 meters), which suggests that stature does not play a decisive role in marathon and that every runner is able to break the national record.

In the women's marathon, runner Hoang Thi Thanh has been holding the national record of 2:45:09, set at the National Athletics Championships in 2016.

In recent years, the running movement in Vietnam has developed rapidly and strongly in both quantity and quality. Professional and non-professional runners are now equipped as well as foreign runners, from nutrition and training plans to specialized equipment for running such as clothes, shoes and watches. All serves a good basis for them to reach their best performance.

Starting in 2018, the VPBank Hanoi Marathon has affirmed the level of a professional marathon, gathering bright stars from the National Team as well as from provincial, city and sectoral teams, along with domestic and foreign elite runners.

The marathon is now the only remaining race that gives runners the opportunity to own one of the 200 historic tickets for the journey to the top of glory on the 31st SEA Games running track.

The inclusion of the National Record-Breaking Prize affirms the ROC's strong belief that runners can make miracles in the VPBank Hanoi Marathon 2021.
