Due to the COVID-19 pandemic impact, recently many international sports activities, including major races such as London Marathon and Berlin Marathon have faced postponement or cancellation. In Vietnam, thanks to the government's fierce involvement and the people's consensus, the country has successfully contained the pandemic. After social distancing measures ended, activities in various fields from economics to culture and politics have resumed since early May 2020.

The reopening of major sports events in Vietnam allows the Race Organizing Committee (ROC) of the VPBank Hanoi Marathon ASEAN 2020 to believe that the race will take place as scheduled on October 18, 2020.

Given the pandemic has not fully been controlled in many countries, ROC would like to announce the contingency plan so that runners can safely register for the VPBank Hanoi Marathon ASEAN 2020.

ROC holds that, in the worst scenario, there could still be two cases:

1. The marathon is postponed due to the re-emergence of the pandemic and the government does not allow sports activities and mass events.

2. Foreign runners who have registered to compete in Vietnam are forced to undergo a 14-day quarantine at arrival, so they will not be able to join the race.

If the above cases occur, ROC would like to propose the following options:

Option 1: The entire registration fee will be automatically brought forward to the 2021 marathon.

Option 2: If the marathon cannot be held as planned due to the pandemic, ROC will arrange an online race instead. Registered runners can still participate in the online race for a fee of USD15, and will receive T-shirt and medal (Vietnamese and foreign runners will need to cover the postage cost for shipping T-shirts and medals). ROC will deduct USD15 from the runner’s registration fee to complete the online race registration. The rest of the fee will be taken forward to the 2021 marathon. This means that the runner will only have to pay an additional USD15 to compete at the registered distance of the 2021 race.

In regard to the marathon’s Terms and Conditions, Article 8 on Delay and Cancellation terms states that runners who have completed registration will not get refunds if the race is delayed or cancelled for any reason. However, the year 2020 is special given the COVID-19 pandemic impact, thus ROC has devised an exception to encourage runners to continue training and improve physical strength to win the pandemic. For details, refer to Article 8 (
