HANOI, Oct 7 (DHA) - Xtep International Holdings Limited, a Hong Kong-listed sporting goods company, has boosted its presence in Vietnam, bringing two Chinese coaches to Hanoi for an intensive training to Vietnamese runners about two weeks before the start of the AIMS-certified VPBank Hanoi Marathon 2019 (VHM).

Coach Tang Tao from Beijing Sport University and female athlete Jin Chunping, champion of several international races, held a training session early on October 5 next to Hoan Kiem lake in Hanoi with more than 150 runners, a second preparation arranged by Xtep, VHM's exclusive sportswear sponsor, and DHA, an organizer of the marathon due on October 20.

While jogging has been popular in the Southeast Asian country, experts said many still lack skills and proper training for long-distance running. In recent years, international marathons organized in various cities across Vietnam have helped attract foreign runners and also stimulated the training spirit among Vietnamese people.

The training on Saturday marked Tang's return after his first Hanoi session on August 31 for runners and VHM pacers, while Jin, herself also a coach from a Xtep running club in Beijing, has been brought in to better help female runners address their specific training issues.

VHM's running course, along with that of the Halong Bay Heritage Marathon (HBHM) to be held on November 24, has received the certification in July 2019 by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Following the certification, runners can use VHM results to qualify for attending the Boston Marathon, one of the world's six most high-profile races known as the World's Marathon Majors.

VHM and HBHM, which are among the best organized marathons in Vietnam, have been promoted by AIMS at the Berlin Marathon on September 29 as DHA seeks to make the events to the world's marathon map.

Up to 7,000 runners are expected to be at VHM's Start Line next to Hoan Kiem lake on October 20, nearly tripling the number of participants in a similar event held in Hanoi last year.

They will compete in four categories, including the 42-km marathon and the 21-km half-marathon on several courses which link the lake in the Old Quarter with two city landmarks, the Long Bien Bridge across the Red River and the West Lake.
