Up to 7,000 Runners to Join VHM 2019

An international marathon to be held in Vietnam's capital next month is expected to draw attention of up to 7,000 people, nearly tripling the number of participants in a similar event last year, the event's organizers said.

By the end of August some 5,500 runners have registered to compete in the VPBank Hanoi Marathon - Heritage Race 2019 (VHM) to be held on Oct 20 in Hanoi, and the number is expected to rise toward the racing day, an official of the Race Organizing Committee said on Monday (Sept 9).

In late August, a Xtep Vietnam statement said the runners will attend VHM's four categories, including 5-km, 10-km, 21-km and 42-km full marathon. Xtep, a Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed company, is the exclusive sportswear sponsor for VHM.

VHM courses are designed to link the capital's Old Quarter with three key destinations, namely Hoan Kiem Lake, the Long Bien Bridge across the Red River and West Lake, organizers said. The event is expected to not only promote the image of Hanoi, but also to attract more foreign visitors to the capital's heritage sites.

Vietnam received a record 15.5 million foreign visitors in 2018, up nearly 20 percent from the previous year, based on government statistics. This year the number of foreign arrivals in the Southeast Asian country is expected to rise 16 percent to 18 million.
